The Way of Walking Alone

Limelighter

Dokkōdō

The “Dokkōdō” (“The Way of Walking Alone”), is a short work written by Miyamoto Musashi a week before he died in 1645.

It consists of 21 precepts and was largely composed on the occasion of Musashi giving away his possessions in preparation for death.

It expresses a stringent, honest, and ascetic view of life.

The Path is not the easy way, nor the comfortable way. It is not the popular or common way. It is not a well worn, clearly marked or for those who are lazy. it does not walk itself.

The Way is The Path of discipline. Of hard work. Of trial and error and failure. It requires personal leadership and creativity and curiosity and consistency. Every day. In all things.
